*L....
i love them... i love hearing their stories... i love the way their eyes light up when you ask them their favourite childhood memory
i love their wrinkles; a real story written... on their hands and faces... some of the wisdom they have to impart
of course that's not to say that they're all great and fun, there's always the ones that are annoying.. and stinky.. and etc etc, so on and so forth... and the crachety old buggers... i could do without them...
but there really are some really cool old people.. *L
both of my grandfathers are at the point where they're wanting to tell their stories... and i couldn't get enough of it... i'm going to saskatchewan this summer to see my grandfather, hopefully not for the last time, as it seems like my visits out there are getting more and more spread apart... but we've plans already to go to the old homestead and the family cabin... grandma's got a box of her recipes for me as she can't cook and bake anymore..
i treasure those moments

...i was terrified of elderly people when i was younger... LOL. Well, all the way up until i was into my 20's, really. *L*. i loved my OWN grandparents, of course, but i used to freak SO hard on having elderly patients in nursing school... i was good with the newborns...maternity, etc... but i was scared of the geriatric patients... lol. They were unpredictable... some of them with dementia, etc...(i did a large portion of my clinicals in a veteran's hospital, *L*) i had them run away, got hit in the head with let's see, a hairbrush, and i think a lunch tray, on my very first day ever... *L*...
i dunno... now that i'm older, i can take those sorts of things with a sense of humor... These days i don't spend much time with patients... hmm, or any, really, come to think of it. But when i first started where i am now, i did the night shift thing and actually ran the sleep studies... All the equipement used takes like 45 minutes to apply, so during that time, you can pretty much let yourself and your patient lapse into an uncomfortable silence that stretches on and on and on... until your hands are sweating inside your gloves andyou feel like screaming, lol... or you learn how to talk with people....
Now i LOVE the elderly... lol. They are SO hilarious, sometimes... you know how people get... they aren't worried so much with what they say anymore, they just tell it to ya like it is, and if you get pissed, oh well, ya know? LOL, if you want an HONEST opinion about something, ask an elderly person...
I agree with paige, also... i LOVE hearing about the way things used to be... i thought it to be annoying when i was younger, but as you get older you start to realize the value of the advice given and lessons contained within these stories... Plus, it is just so wild to sit back and think about this person... you're elderly NOW... but you were once just a girl... fell in love for the first time... had her first kiss... watched and listened, and took in everything that happened for the better part of a century going on around her... sometimes i just wanted to pull up a chair, sit down, and say "ok... now tell me the answers to... EVERYTHING!!!" lol. You figure out SO many things as you go along... it would be convenient to have a cheat sheet...
Wow, this is long. *L*.... the short version would have gone something like: i love elderly people, except when they are driving the car in FRONT of me. *G*
